JIM GILMORE TO OPEN EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE FOR 2008 PRESIDENTIAL BID, SAYS HE ALREADY HAS OPERATIVES ON GROUND IN IOWA, AND SC!!!
The local CBS affiliate WTVR CBS 6 is reporting tonight that former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore is considering a run for President in 2008. According to the report, Gilmore said he is considering the run because "there are no real Conservatives in the bidding." I'm working on finding the story online, and will post a link as soon as I can locate it.
BREAKING:
UPDATE: The AP is now reporting that Jim Gilmore announced earlier today that he will explore a presidential bid in 2008.
Citing what he said was the lack of a true conservative in the field of GOP White House prospects, Gilmore said he will charter a federal committee in January that would allow him to assess his chances for the race himself.
"There is not a committed conservative in the field who can put together a national campaign. I am and I can. I have people on the ground right now in Iowa and in South Carolina," Gilmore, 57, said in a telephone interview from New York.
In what MAY be an attack on other potential GOP Presidential nominees (more specifically Rudy Giuliani who called himself a Democrat before September 11, 2001), Gilmore said the following:
"I am not someone who has to evolve as a conservative. I don't have to evolve my position."
UPDATE #2: Gilmore was among the earliest supporters of then Texas Governor George W. Bush in 2000, and was rewarded by Bush who later appointed Gilmore chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Being among the first to endorse one of the worst President's in U.S. history is hardly something you want on your resume, especially at a point where George Bush's approval numbers are dipping into the upper twenties according to some polls.
UPDATE #3: Ex-Gov. Gilmore may seek presidency - RTD
On what he perceives to be a "lack of committed conservatives" in the field, Gilmore told the RTD:
"A void exists," Gilmore said in an interview. "There is just no conservative right now who can mount a national campaign."
In another attack on potential nominees, Gilmore said of Mitt Romney:
"I didn't run someplace and pretend I was a liberal and run someplace else as a conservative. I just didn't do that."
Gilmore also declined to give his opinion on whether or not the decision to invade Iraq was a wise one. However, he did essentially admit that the White House doesn't have a specific mission for Iraq:
He did say he would not support an increase in troop strength there unless a specific mission was spelled out and that he would not support a timetable for withdrawing troops.
UPDATE #4: The NYT has it now as well.

you say that he was a friend of Bush in the beginning, but he left because he and bush's people clashed (i guess you missed that part), so obviously he and Bush don't get along.
I love anons.
He "clashed" with Karl Rove. That still doesn't makeup for the fact that he was among the first to endorse a failed President.
Sorry, but as a Republican, you're in a lose/lose situation. By admitting that Gilmore distanced himself from Bush (and therefore shouldn't be targeted for being among the first to endorse him) you admit that Bush is a failed President...you can't have it both ways. Nice try though. NEXT PLEASE.
My reaction:
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Jim Gilmore makes me giggle.
So what's wrong with saying Bush failed? Who even considers him a REAL conservative? Just because you're a republican doesn't mean you have to support a neo-con. Gilmore distanced himself from Bush beause he obviously didn't believe the same things and he wasn't a real conservative. I would be worried if you did support Gilmore, it'd make me question his views to know that someone that probley is a Mark Warner lover liked a GOOD and truthful guy.
