Tim Kaine slams Hargrove remarks

Remarks by Hanover Delegate Frank Hargrove saying "black citizens should get over it" regarding slavery and "should we blame the Jews for killing Christ?" regarding proposed legislation for the Commonwealth to officially apologize for slavery have angered many across the state, including Governor Tim Kaine, who responded today calling the statements both outrageous and very unfortunate. Via the Richmond Times Dispatch:

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said yesterday that comments made this week by a Hanover County delegate that offended blacks and Jews were "outrageous" and "very unfortunate."

Kaine, speaking to reporters yesterday afternoon, described the "overwhelming majority" of Virginians as "open, welcoming people, and they want this commonwealth to be like that.

"And anytime a comment is made that carries any kind of official imprimatur because it's made by somebody in elective office . . . that creates a sense of division among people that is really unfortunate," Kaine said.
