Jim Gilmore assures us he still knows nothing about fiscal policy
Jim Gilmore wants you to know that if elected President, he will be the same fiscal disaster nationally as he was in Virginia when he served as Governor. In a brief interview this morning with the Richmond Times Dispatch, Gilmore referred to himself as a "Ronald Reagan Conservative" and said Republicans nationally find his anti-tax policy "refreshing." He went on to say:
"They want somebody who if they make a promise, they'll keep it. What I've heard from people in the Republican party nationally and from people across the country is it's refreshing that someone would care about the taxpayer . . . and keep their word."
Jim Gilmore obviously STILL DOESN'T GET IT, DOES HE? His attempt to abolish the car tax not only FAILED (so much for keeping his word), but it nearly WRECKED the Virginia economy in the process.
If Americans are smart, Gilmore won't even make it to the primaries.

First off, you DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING. I'm so tired of these Mark Warner Lackey's who attack Governor Gilmore. There was no budget deficit. The only person who seems to know nothing about fiscal policy is YOU. You write mis-information and flat out lies to attack something you obviously know nothing about. If you want to know why the phase out was haulted, why don't you ask Walter Stasch or John Chichester? Oh wait, Stasch's days are numbered with Blackburn running. Hopefully people like you are a dying breed; hopefully you'll fade away once you realize you're writing lies. We can only hope. Go Gilmore!

Please, do some homework, or find a better way to spend your time.
Looks like I have to school another "anon." Please, show me where I said there was a budget deficit? Oh wait, you can't, because I never said that. Lies? Where? It's a well known fact that Jim Gilmore was a VERY BAD Governor when it came to the VA economy and sound fiscal policy.
Mark Warner Lackey's? Awwww, I'm sorry that Mark Warner saved Virginia from losing it's awesome credit rating (although I'm sure you have no idea what that means).
Go do some homework? Is that supposed to be an insult? Please, go somewhere else and troll, you're not wanted here.
Would you please explain to me what you mean by "sound fiscal policy"? I would think leaving Virginia with a $500 million surplus(Jim Gilmore) without the states largest tax increase(Mark Warner) pretty sound. Just admit it: You're a liberal blogger who's only interested in tearing down a strong Republican. You don't want change in America, you want things to be terrible so when people like Mark Warner and Tim Kaine come around they can "save the day".
No no, my telling you to go do some homework was in desperate hopes of trying to get you to not make statements like "VERY BAD" and then show nothing to back up your claims. Your normative statements are sickening. Please, post some hard fact rather than regurgitating liberal blather. Did you read any of those links? Probably not because they don't flaunt people like Mark Warner.
I will depart now because you obviously know zero about politics. But I will always remember when Mark Warner touts himself as a fiscal conservative in his Governor's run what he really means "I will lie to every Virginian to get what I want"
America is better off without people like Mark Warner who will say anything to get elected. Blog away Terry while the real politicians do the work.
Whoa. Whoa. Whoa.
First off, let's spell his name right. It's Walter Stosch. And I think you forgot to mention that Stosch and Chichester are also Republicans.
Why did they kill the car tax phase-out? Well, they realized that we couldn't afford it if the state was going to be able to fund anything in the next fiscal year, namely transportation. Don't piss off those liberal Northern Virginians! Assholes, they're the only ones that need roads. The rest of the state is just fine.
Check that Wapo again homie. Yeah, 544 mil. surplus under Warner after raising taxes. You're right. He also lowered the grocery tax and other ridiculous base taxes that make no sense for families nor individuals. Yes, more taxes from income, (scaled appropriately of course), less on the regressive taxes that are annoying and senseless. It's called consolidation, and if taxes are lumped at a centralized level, that means less bureaucracy for other taxes that needn't exist in the first place. Meaning we pay a little less for state government. Word!
Money is money. You'll need it one day, and I'd rather suffer through a minor tax hike for a few years than be left with an even bigger shitstorm 10 years down the road. In which I'll be paying twice for a tax hike that is twice the increase that we could have had years ago. WITH LESS BUREAUCRACY. Meaning somewhere along the line, after accruance, I just saved some money cause we didn't have to pay for another annex at the Dep't. of taxation in $$$$mond.
Let's not forget that at that point in 2004, we had one of the lowest sales taxes in the country. I can't remember where we placed, but we were in the lowest 5. I believe Kentucky was pretty ridiculous too- regardless, we were paying 4.5%, our neighbor to the North was paying damn near 8%, and friggin LIBERAL TENNESSEE was paying almost 10% (mainly because they had no state income taxes). Sundquist, very much like Gilmore, rammed them in the hole by biting off more than he could chew. It took a fiscally sane Bredesen to come along and make some tough decisions. They got the lottery, they got a state income tax, and they got over it. And by that I mean Bredesen just won re-election by a landslide.
In general, most Virginians are pretty realistic. They want a pay-as-you-go system, not some hyped up super-vague scheme in which to pay for the necessary evils. What they DON'T WANT are frivolous tax hikes at inappropriate times. They want the government to use their wallets just like they and their families have to- WISELY. One difference- when families are running a tight budget, there is alot of room for budget cuts. This can be the same with the state government, but it's not quite as easy. We can't downgrade roads, or our school systems, or our state parks, or what have you.
Seems like the equation you have come up with is the same greasy car-salesman tactics that Sir Kilgore and company dreamed up: "Grow the economy". Well, OK. Good plan. Wish to elaborate? He never did. And then he bit the dust.
Virginians "get it", and that's why they liked Mark Warner. And still do, btw. You can't just have this magic "grow the economy" formula without making the state a suitable place for companies to relocate to, or to raise a family, or to otherwise do business in. It just won't work. Innovation and growth goes hand in hand with MATURE fiscal policy, not some whiny people who want to cause a stink because a few more dollars a month are being taken out of their paycheck or surrendered at Wal-Mart when they buy some batteries.
Gilmore was the king of the gimmick. The car tax phaseout was a gimmick. He won the race on that gimmick. He also brought down the GOP faithful on that gimmick. We couldn't afford the phase out. REMEMBER THIS: Even GEORGE ALLEN'S APPOINTEES on the Board of Economic Advisors warned this plan WOULD NOT WORK. Not enough money in the kitty. The cumulative package was to cost 2.8 BILLION over the seven-year phase out. The shit started stalling in 2000, with the bi-annual cuts getting smaller and smaller until the moderate, intelligent wing of the GOP decided to shut the door on it.
Virginians realize now how much of a gimmick this was. To defend a piece of legislation that was so flaky based on partisan pissiness is to understate your own intelligence. The blogger might not know the intricacies, but just like the majority of Virginians ex-post facto, HE UNDERSTOOD THAT IT WAS A BAD IDEA AND THAT IT WAS AN ELECTORAL STRATEGY.
I could go on for days. I'm gonna go ahead an assume you weren't in Richmond when this shitstorm was going down, but I'm not saying that to be an asshole, I'm just saying that because those ridiculous committee hearings burn deep in my skull.
This is ridiculous. I gotta go to bed.
"I would think leaving Virginia with a $500 million surplus(Jim Gilmore) without the states largest tax increase(Mark Warner) pretty sound."
WRONG. Not only did Gilmore leave the state budget in SHAMBLES, but it was also forecasted that we'd be in a DEFICIT by the third year of Warner's term (if not sooner). Gilmore's surplus wasn't sustainable because he was striping revenue faster than he replaced it.
In the future please refrain yourself from simply MAKING SHIT UP. $500m surplus at the end of Gilmore's term my ASS.
Hah Terry, please! I agree with that guy! Go do some homework... you'll see that there WAS a surplus! So in your words... "deficit my ass"
"Hah Terry, please! I agree with that guy! Go do some homework... you'll see that there WAS a surplus! So in your words... 'deficit my ass' "
Hah John, please! PAY ATTENTION. I've already addressed this but I suppose I'll do it again - PLEASE show me where I said there was a deficit? No, rather, I said that there was a very small surplus, and in my last comment above, said that when Gilmore was about to leave office, it was projected that the state's surplus would be a deficit within three years, but thank God Warner knew what he was doing and was able to turn things around.
Weird. I thought $544 million was a lot.

You must be joking. Seriously, what are you smoking? JIM GILMORE LEFT OFFICE IN EARLY 2002. THAT ARTICLE DEALS WITH FISCAL YEAR 2005. I NEVER SAID THERE WOULD DEFINATELY BE A DEFICIT 3 YEARS AFTER GILMORE LEFT OFFICE, I SAID (I thought it was self explanatory, but I forgot who I'm dealing with here) THAT (HAD GILMORE'S FAILED FISCAL POLICY BEEN ALLOWED TO CONTINUE) IT WAS *****PROJECTED***** THAT THERE WOULD BE A DEFICIT THREE YEARS AFTER HE LEFT OFFICE (again, only if his failed policy was allowed to move forward). The only reason we DIDN'T HAVE a deficit in fiscal year 2005 was because Mark Warner stepped in and cleaned up Gilmore's mess. Once again, the Gilmore surplus wasn't sustainable because he was striping revenue faster than he replaced it.
Is that clear enough for you? Good Grief.
blah blah blah... i love taxes... blah blah blah... im a liberal scum bag... blah blah blahh
mhm crystal clear!

I figured that was the kind of response I'd get once they finally realized they were beaten with facts.
or tired of arguing with people that are totally wrong. want facts? check out (again) those links that guy posted. then you'll get your facts.
"or tired of arguing with people that are totally wrong. want facts? check out (again) those links that guy posted. then you'll get your facts."
The WaPo article that showed Warner had corrected Gilmore's DISASTER? That's the facts you want me to checkout? Well thanks, but I was already aware of that, you didn't have to point it out. You guys are truly PATHETIC.
They day you, Terry, can hold the credentials that Gov. Gilmore has, then maybe someone will listen to you're shit.
"They day you, Terry, can hold the credentials that Gov. Gilmore has, then maybe someone will listen to you're shit"
You're shit? Uhmm, ROFL.
Anyway, once again, I give facts, you attack me. Typical Conservative tactic, but nice try.
NEXT PLEASE.
looks like the gilmore people are re-energized by George Allen's defeat.
and you obviously have the liberal tactics down. you believe a bunch of lies, defend them, and then support the guy who lies to your face. rock on.
"and you obviously have the liberal tactics down. you believe a bunch of lies, defend them, and then support the guy who lies to your face. rock on."
Again, I give you facts, and you attack me - which you just did AGAIN.
Thanks for further proving my point. Happy HOLIDAYS!
look at all the grover nordquist(s) that came out of the woodshed!
Happy Holidays to both D's and R's!
