House rebukes Bush policy, Senate set for a vote this afternoon

After the House passed a symbolic, non-binding measure stating their opposition to George Bush's "escalation strategy" yesterday, the Senate has scheduled a vote on a similar measure sometime this afternoon.

"They are torn between their president's policy and the wishes of the constituents, but vote they must," Sen. Charles Schumer (news, bio, voting record), D-N.Y., said of Republicans.

GOP critics demanded equal treatment for an alternative that rejects any attempt to reduce or eliminate funds for troops in the field.

Democrats refused, and gridlock was the likely result.

The Bush lapdogs were out in force, denouncing the measure (that's non-binding, mind you), and those who support it. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson of Texas crying that the measure "undercuts the commander in chief and the troops on a mission in the field." Well, Senator Hutchinson, when the "Commander in Chief" is insane, and obviously has no regard for the lives of those troops, he must be undercut. The American people are no longer willing to "compromise" with the Republican party simply because they can't bear to admit the man they have in the White House is beyond insane.
